As Skye discussed, such open areas probably do not lend themselves well to the kinds of personal connections or relaxed rapport one might find in more private spaces. Yet I’ve found that we can still often establish such connections amidst the low din of other students clicking on keyboards or quietly discussing homework in the background. I actually find it comforting — and motivating — to be surrounding by diligently working students. The students with whom I work seem to be most concerned about making themselves vulnerable to the Judgment of a Good Writer, but once we as tutors establish a welcoming atmosphere, they don’t seem to mind that other people are nearby.
This open space is, after all, the one we’ve got — and I continue to be happy with our results
